If you are experiencing an unplanned pregnancy, you might be wondering what pregnancy resources are available. It can be a scary time, especially if you are unsure how you will manage, or unsure of what decision you want to make with your pregnancy.

Let’s examine resources that are available to pregnant women and help you find the clarity and resources that can help you in your journey.

Do I know what pregnancy resources are available?

Perhaps you are considering abortion because you don’t believe you have the means to be a parent. Or perhaps you believe carrying the pregnancy would prevent your other goals. However, it’s important to recognize what resources are available to you.

Start with those close to you. If your relationship with your partner is still ongoing, he may be able to provide support in ways you may not expect, from financial to emotional support.

You can also turn to your “inner circle.” Start with family and friends who might step up in surprising ways, such as agreeing to babysit, meal prepping, or just listening when you need it.

What pregnancy resources are there in the community?

Additional support resources are in the community. Look for public and nonprofit organizations specializing in your specific needs. Examples include:

Pregnancy Resource Centers

Local food pantries

State Departments of Human Services

Information Referral Resources & Services

County Resource Centers

Crisis Hotlines

Church donation centers

Public Financial Aid Programs

If you are concerned about an abusive relationship, you can contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline by calling 1-800-799-SAFE for help.

What is my next step if I need help finding resources?

You might want to reach out to your local Pregnancy Resource Center if you are not sure where to start.

Here at Waterleaf Women’s Center, we have professionals who can confidentially discuss your specific situation and help you connect with the right resources. Every client is treated with compassion, without judgment, and all of our services are free. We can also provide you with the important step of getting a medical-grade pregnancy test and ultrasound, which is important no matter what decision you are planning.

You may be facing an unplanned pregnancy and considering abortion. You may be considering an in-clinic abortion or the at-home abortion pill. And you may wonder, “What steps do I need to take before an abortion?”

Knowing more about abortion, what to do first, how to find resources, understanding your situation, and more, can help you make the best decision. Let’s examine things you should consider before scheduling an abortion.

Have I confirmed pregnancy?

After seeing a positive at-home pregnancy test, you would be advised to receive professional confirmation before proceeding with scheduling an abortion or ordering the abortion pill. A lab-quality test administered by a medical professional can give you peace of mind. Here at Waterleaf, we can provide you with a medical-grade pregnancy test at no cost.

Have I had an ultrasound before an abortion?

An ultrasound is a crucial step for any pregnant woman, for any decision she is considering. The ultrasound reveals information about:

The location of your pregnancy. If your pregnancy has implanted anywhere outside the uterus you could have an ectopic pregnancy. In this instance, you would be advised to seek immediate medical attention that may require surgery other than abortion. If you are considering the abortion pill, the FDA specifically says the abortion pill “will not be effective to terminate an ectopic pregnancy.”

The gestational age of your pregnancy is determined by measuring the dimensions of the pregnancy. Different types of abortion procedures vary based on the gestational age of your pregnancy. If you are considering the abortion pill, it can be dangerous to you if your pregnancy is farther along than you may think. The FDA approves of the abortion pill up to 70 days (10 weeks). Abortion pill risks such as uterine rupture increase the farther along you are in your pregnancy. The ultrasound provides you with an accurate gestational age so you can make the best decision for you.

The viability of your pregnancy. If a heartbeat cannot be detected, it is possible you may naturally miscarry. In this case, you would be advised to follow up with your physician, and you would avoid an unnecessary abortion procedure.

Knowing this information from the ultrasound is very important for your health and situation, whether or not you are considering abortion. Waterleaf can provide you with free medical-grade pregnancy testing and an ultrasound.

Do I know the health impact of abortion?

If abortion is an option you’re exploring, it’s critical to understand the physical and mental health risks. The two methods of abortion are surgical and the abortion pill (also known as medication abortion), each with potential complications.

Physical Risks: Surgical abortion risks include infection, heavy bleeding, uterine damage and more. Medication abortion risks include severe cramping, bleeding, infections, or incomplete abortion. Taking abortion pills at home may seem like a private and safe matter, but a procedure done outside the presence of a doctor has risks. You may require immediate medical care for excess bleeding or surgery due to an incomplete abortion. The FDA also warns against buying abortion pills online, because unregulated sources may send unsafe or ineffective drugs.

Mental Health Risks: Some women experience emotional challenges after having an abortion, such as sadness, guilt, anxiety, or even PTSD. You may find it helpful to discuss your situation and feelings with a professional before making a serious decision like abortion. Waterleaf Women’s Center can offer you a free pregnancy consultation with no insurance required to walk you through your feelings and what is involved in the abortion process.

Am I being pressured to abort?

It’s important to make an informed decision without being coerced. Sadly, it is not uncommon for a woman to feel pressured into having an abortion. One study reported up to 64% of American women who had abortions described being pressured to have an abortion.

A woman may feel pressure to abort from various directions, including from their partners, their family, or their peers. One study asked men to self-report coercing their partner into abortion. Up to 7.3% of men admitted to pressuring their partners into abortion, which accounts for tens of thousands of abortions per year.

If you are in a situation where you feel threatened or in danger, you can contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline by calling 1-800-799-SAFE for help.

What do I know about the abortion provider?

Whether you are considering an abortion in-clinic or at-home abortion pills, it’s important to know about your provider.

Has your provider advised you on what to do if you have complications? Do you know the provider’s safety record? Does your provider have hospital admitting privileges at a hospital near you? Have you ordered the abortion pill from a reliable source? Has your provider screened your blood’s Rh factor or performed an ultrasound to look for possible ectopic pregnancy?

If you are not sure what to ask, you may consider this article: What questions should I ask the abortion pill provider?

Take the first step

It’s important before making a serious decision like abortion to know the health impact, that your decision isn’t made under pressure, and that you’ve explored all your options and resources. You deserve to know the truth to make an informed decision with confidence.

Schedule a free and confidential pregnancy test and ultrasound appointment today. It’s okay to come in unsure. The Waterleaf medical staff and team are here to talk with you about all your options and give you the clarity you need. Call or text us confidentially today at 630-360-2256.

The abortion law in Illinois allows for abortion under specific conditions. An abortion includes both in-clinic and at-home via the abortion pill. This article provides an overview of current Illinois law regarding abortion and recent changes that have taken place.

What are the conditions for legal abortion in Illinois?

The “Reproductive Health Act” (RHA) of 2019 is the primary law related to abortion in Illinois. The main takeaway is that abortion in Illinois is legal up to the point of “fetal viability.” This must be determined by a doctor.

If the fetus is determined to be able to survive after delivery without extraordinary equipment, an abortion is not permitted unless continuing the pregnancy would put the woman’s life in danger.

The Act states:

If the health care professional determines that there is fetal viability, the health care professional may provide abortion care only if, in the professional judgment of the health care professional, the abortion is necessary to protect the life or health of the patient.

When is a fetus viable?

The viability of a fetus can vary. Recently, the Guinness record for the earliest fetus surviving delivery was set at 21 weeks after receiving intensive care.

A 2024 study at the American Academy of Pediatrics studied survival rates on viability from 22-25 weeks. The farther along a fetus is, the less likely a fetus requires intensive care after delivery.

In the state of Illinois, the viability of the fetus is determined by a doctor.

What are recent changes to laws pertaining to abortion law in Illinois?

In 2023, Illinois passed House Bill 4664, which amended the Reproductive Health Act and several other laws related to abortion. The changes in law included the following:

Requires any lawsuit filed under to the Reproductive Health Act to start within 2 years after the incident.

Allows not only doctors, but a “nurse or physician assistant,” to perform certain abortions.

Makes it easier for abortion practitioners who have had their license “revoked” in another state to practice in Illinois.

I’m considering abortion in Illinois. What’s my next step?

If you are pregnant and considering abortion, your first step is to obtain an ultrasound. The ultrasound is a crucial step and reveals information like:

The location of your pregnancy. If your pregnancy has implanted anywhere outside the uterus you could have an ectopic pregnancy. In this instance, you would be advised to seek immediate medical attention. If you are considering the abortion pill, it’s important to know the FDA specifically says the abortion pill “will not be effective to terminate an ectopic pregnancy.”

The gestational age is determined by measuring the dimensions of the pregnancy.

Schedule an appointment

If you are considering abortion or the abortion pill, obtaining an ultrasound first is an important step. At Waterleaf Women’s Center, our medical professionals can provide you with a free medical and pregnancy consultation, including ultrasound. No insurance is required. Call or text us today at 630-360-2256. You deserve compassionate care!

Discovering you’re pregnant when you already have one or more children can feel like a whirlwind, especially if it was unplanned. Suddenly, questions flood in: I’m pregnant with kids – how can I take on even more responsibility? What about finances? What about time commitments?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, you’re not alone. Many women in your shoes have navigated this path. This article explores key things to consider—including support for your family—while acknowledging both challenges and ways to work things out.

Acknowledging the challenge of being pregnant with kids

Being pregnant with children can bring joy mixed with anxiety about stretching yourself thinner. Some women even consider abortion as an option.

It’s okay to feel conflicted or unsure.

For instance, take the story of Rebecca, who said, “Being pregnant when you’ve already got one, it is a lot more tiring… being in full-time college and looking after my little girl as well, it’s a lot more time.” But she persisted even through a difficult pregnancy and eventually celebrated her daughter’s new brother.

Tapping into support: You’re not going it alone

If being pregnant with an existing child or children has you overwhelmed, it’s important to understand you are not alone.

Another support resource comes from the community. Look for public and nonprofit organizations specializing in your specific need. Examples include:

Pregnancy Resource Centers

Local food pantries

State Departments of Human Services

Information Referral Resources & Services

County Resource Centers

Crisis Hotlines

Church donation centers

Public Financial Aid Programs

Here at Waterleaf Women’s Center, we have professionals who can discuss your specific situation and help you connect with the right resources.

A Sibling for my current kid(s)

Remember, adding a new baby isn’t just about more diapers—your current child or children stand to benefit. Research shows that siblings can bring lifelong benefits, fostering emotional and social development.

An article at Psychology Today describes that siblings “learn how to manage conflict, express empathy, compete, collaborate, and reconcile.” Positive sibling relationships also tend toward “greater self-esteem and social competence in adulthood.”

A 2018 study observed that children with siblings “had healthier physical activity patterns” and “opportunity for playmate and serving as additional caregivers.” The study theorizes that “childhood obesity may be prevented by minimizing” inactive behaviors. In other words, kids encourage kids to play and move around, which has health benefits.

Taking the next step: Get that Ultrasound

As you weigh your situation, your first empowering move is scheduling an ultrasound. No matter what decision you are considering, the ultrasound is important in determining several things for your health and information:

The location of your pregnancy. If your pregnancy has implanted anywhere outside the uterus you could have an ectopic pregnancy. In this instance, you would be advised to seek immediate medical attention.

The gestational age is determined by measuring the dimensions of the pregnancy. This information empowers you to make informed decisions and plan for your health and family.

The viability of your pregnancy. If a heartbeat cannot be detected, it is possible you may naturally miscarry. In this case, you would be advised to follow up with your physician.

What questions should I ask the abortion pill provider?

If you are considering the abortion pill, it’s important to understand what will happen before, during and after taking the pills. You deserve the best for your health and safety. You may wonder, “What questions should I ask the abortion pill provider?”

Let’s pause and go through some of the important questions you should consider before undergoing an abortion procedure.

Do you have a doctor who will provide care if there are side effects or complications?

The FDA label for the abortion pill lists multiple serious side effect risks, including infection or sepsis, heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, or an incomplete abortion in which pregnancy tissue remains inside the woman. A recent study of insurance claims showed that up to 11% of women experience serious complications after taking the abortion pill.

Does the doctor who prescribed the abortion pill for you offer medical care if you experience side effects or complications? Or does the doctor suggest you go to the emergency room if you experience complications?

Does the provider suggest that I don’t tell the emergency room that I took the abortion pill?

Some abortion pill providers tell patients to conceal that they took the abortion pill from other doctors, including doctors at the emergency room. They will suggest to patients to say they are having a miscarriage.

However, an induced abortion and a miscarriage are not the same. If you’ve taken the abortion pill, your body will have been altered to block progesterone from reaching your pregnancy. The second abortion pill, misoprostol, causes “uterine contractions” and “bleeding.” In a naturally-occurring miscarriage, your body will not have the effects of the drugs in the abortion pills.

One study showed that concealing the abortion pill from emergency room doctors was “more likely to result” in the woman having to have surgery to remove remaining pregnancy tissue and result in delayed care.

Another scientist warned that there is evidence that the abortion pill may “suppress the immune system.” This would make a woman more vulnerable to bacterial infection.

For reasons like these, it is advisable to be open with emergency room doctors, and you are not delayed the care you need. If your abortion pill provider suggests you withhold information from doctors, that provider may not be prioritizing your health and safety.

What is the abortion pill provider’s safety record?

Have you examined reviews of the abortion pill provider? Have patients described bad experiences or bad service from the provider? If you identify multiple bad reviews or troubling stories, consider this in your decision-making.

Are there any lawsuits against the abortion pill provider for medical violations? Consider doing a web search or deep AI search about the provider.

Is the abortion pill provider certified in the “Mifepristone REMS Program”?

The FDA specifically does not recommend buying the abortion pill online. They recommend asking your provider if they are certified in the Mifepristone REMS Program or working under the supervision of someone who is. The FDA cautions against buying the abortion pill online or buying from other countries because they “cannot ensure the safety, effectiveness, or quality of those medications.”

Does your abortion pill provider have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital?

Hospital admitting privileges is a “right granted to a doctor to admit patients to a particular hospital.” That doctor can then submit paperwork, will know your current case situation, and can provide you treatment at that hospital. This can help expedite the process to get you any medical care you may need during or after you’ve taken the abortion pill.

Has the abortion pill provider advised you to be screened for Rh Factor?

Having an abortion without knowing your blood’s “Rh factor” could jeopardize future pregnancies. When the blood of an Rh-positive fetus gets into the blood of an Rh-negative woman, her body will recognize that it does not belong and will create antibodies to fight it. This is called being Rh-sensitized. These antibodies remain in a woman’s body and could obstruct future pregnancies.

To prevent Rh-sensitization, women with an Rh-negative blood type need a special shot, called RHoGAM, any time there is a possibility that the fetus’s blood could mix with the mother’s blood, such as during an abortion. An Rh-negative woman in this situation would be advised to obtain a RHoGAM shot within 72 hours after delivery, including abortion. You may need to obtain a RhoGAM shot with your own provider.

Has your abortion provider conducted an ultrasound to check for ectopic pregnancy?

An ectopic pregnancy is when the fertilized egg implants somewhere outside the inner lining of the uterus. Ectopic pregnancy occurs in about 2% of pregnancies which is 1 in 50.

The FDA label for the abortion pill specifically says it will not be effective on an ectopic pregnancy. The “current standard for ectopic pregnancy diagnosis” includes getting a clinical assessment with an advanced ultrasound and additional testing like monitoring HCG levels.

If you were to have a suspected ectopic pregnancy, you would be advised to seek immediate medical attention.

You can obtain a free limited ultrasound at Waterleaf Women’s Center. It is confidential, and no insurance is required.

Has your abortion provider screened you for STDs?

STD testing is especially important for women considering abortion. Undiagnosed STD’s, like chlamydia and gonorrhea, can increase your long-term risks. No matter what type of abortion is performed, the cervix must open for the pregnancy to leave the body. When this happens, bacteria can move up into the uterus, increasing the risk of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID). PID can result in an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy, infertility, and chronic pain.

You can obtain screening for chlamydia and gonorrhea at Waterleaf Women’s Center. It is confidential, and no insurance is required.

Unsure about what questions to ask the abortion pill provider? What are the next steps?

If you’ve searched for information on “what happens when you take the abortion pill,” you may be considering an at-home abortion. This is sometimes known as a medical or chemical abortion. The process involves taking pills to end a pregnancy, often obtained via mail or clinic.

You deserve to be fully informed about steps, physical effects, risks, and potential emotional impacts. Let’s review the abortion pill based on medical sources, including FDA labels for the pills involved. Be sure to seek the advice of your physician or qualified health care provider with any questions you may have regarding an existing medical condition or treatment before taking the abortion pill.

What Happens when You take the Abortion Pill?
– How is the Abortion Pill taken?

The abortion pill isn’t a single pill but a regimen of two medications: mifepristone and misoprostol. It is approved by the FDA for use up to 70 days (10 weeks) from your last menstrual period. According to FDA guidelines, you take the first pill – mifepristone – by mouth on Day 1. This is followed 24 to 48 hours later by the second set of pills – misoprostol – typically placed in the cheek pouches (buccally) for 30 minutes before swallowing any remnants.

How Does the Abortion Pill Work?

The first pill works by blocking progesterone, a hormone that maintains your pregnancy. Without progesterone, the lining of your uterus breaks down, causing the pregnancy to detach from the uterus and terminate.

About 24 to 48 hours later, you take the second set of pills, which cause the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy tissue.

What Are Abortion Pill Side Effects?

Side effects from the abortion pill can start soon after taking it and may include nausea, weakness, fever or chills, vomiting, headache, diarrhea, and dizziness.

Bleeding is an “expected” symptom that occurs when the pregnancy detaches from the inside of your uterine wall. However, the FDA label warns that “prolonged heavy bleeding may be a sign of incomplete abortion.” An incomplete abortion could require surgery.

The FDA also warns of potential serious bacterial infections or sepsis, which can be fatal if not treated promptly. Long-lasting fever, severe abdominal pain, or prolonged heavy bleeding could be a sign of infection that requires immediate emergency care.

The FDA says the effects of both sets of pills involve:

Bleeding or spotting can be expected for an average of 9 to16 days and may last for up to 30 days. Your bleeding may be similar to, or greater than, a normal heavy period. You may see blood clots and tissue. This is an expected part of passing the pregnancy.

The FDA label for misoprostol also refers to risks like uterine rupture, stating: “The risk of uterine rupture increases with advancing gestational ages…” Risk of rupture is also increased with prior uterine surgery or c-section.

Handling the Passed Tissue After an At-Home Abortion

According to WebMD, after you take the second set of abortion pills, you will “probably notice clots, and you might see some pregnancy tissue.” Some women, even under 9 weeks of pregnancy, have reported “recognizable” tissue.

The Health Service Executive (HSE) says women taking the abortion pill have passed tissue into the toilet or wrapped it for other disposal. Some have opted for burials.

You may consider contacting your local county health department for advice on the best way to discard remains and information on any medical sanitation laws that may pertain to your situation.

Potential Emotional Effects of the Abortion Pill

Beyond physical effects, many women experience emotional impacts from an at-home abortion. According to the Mayo Clinic, you may experience short-term reactions like relief, loss, sadness, guilt, or anxiety.

Longer term effects often relate to emotional or psychological issues:

A 2018 study said, “abortion is consistently associated with elevated rates of mental illness compared to women without a history of abortion.”

A 25-year study observed women who had an abortion experienced “elevated rates of subsequent mental health problems including depression, anxiety, suicidal behaviours and substance use disorders.”

Another found over 14% of women met criteria for PTSD post-abortion.

A 30-year study found that women who had abortions “had rates of mental health problems that were about 30% higher than rates of disorder in other women.”

A 2018 study observed that “the number of induced abortions was correlated” with higher risk of suicidal tendency.” This means risk of suicide increased beginning with a woman’s first abortion and increased every time she obtained another abortion. Another researcher observed a range of 2x and 6x increased risk of suicide after abortion.

Next Step: Get an Ultrasound Before You Take the Abortion Pill

Before starting the abortion pill process, an ultrasound is important. The ultrasound reveals 3 important pieces of information:

An ultrasound provides important information about your pregnancy:

The location of the pregnancy. If your pregnancy has implanted anywhere outside the uterus, you could have an ectopic pregnancy. In this instance, you would be advised to seek immediate medical attention. If you are considering taking the abortion pill, it could be especially dangerous if the pregnancy is ectopic. The FDA warns the abortion pill “will not be effective to terminate an ectopic pregnancy.” Ectopic pregnancies occur in about 2% of pregnancies and have been increasing in recent years, especially among young women.

The gestational age. This is determined by measuring the dimensions of the pregnancy. The abortion pill is FDA approved only through 10-weeks of pregnancy.

The viability of the pregnancy. If a heartbeat cannot be detected, it is possible you may naturally miscarry. In this case, you would be advised to follow up with your physician and avoid taking abortion pills.

When faced with an unexpected situation, we often panic and make decisions out of fear or confusion. Did you recently discover you were unexpectedly pregnant? If so, maybe you chose to have a medical abortion but are wondering if you made the right decision. Perhaps you asked how safe is abortion pill reversal?

This article will review the abortion pill, how abortion pill reversal works, and safety considerations, all to help you make informed decisions about your health.

How does the abortion pill work?

The abortion pill regimen is a series of two pills. It is approved by the FDA up to 10 weeks of pregnancy. The first pill, mifepristone, blocks the hormone progesterone, which your pregnancy needs to continue. The second set of pills, misoprostol, are taken 24-48 hours later, which causes “uterine contractions” and “bleeding” to expel the pregnancy.

What is the Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) Process?

The goal of abortion pill reversal is to replenish the progesterone that the first abortion pill blocked. The APR protocol is ideally administered within 24-72 hours after the first abortion pill was taken and before the second set of pills are taken.

APR floods progesterone into a woman’s system to counteract the effects of the abortion pill.

Many women report successful pregnancies after effective abortion pill reversal treatment. A study concluded 64 – 68% of pregnancies proceed to term after women receive the abortion pill reversal protocol. The sooner you start treatment, the higher the possibility of continuing your pregnancy. That’s why it’s critical to contact an APR specialist immediately if you aren’t sure you want to continue with the abortion pill.

How Safe is Abortion Pill Reversal?

The hormone progesterone used in the APR protocol has a historic record of maternal and fetal safety. It is a hormone that occurs naturally in the body and can be administered as medicine. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved “bioidentical progesterone” in 1998 and it has been used in medical settings since the 1950s. Progesterone is prescribed for a variety of conditions, including for women with menstrual cycle irregularities, IVF, infertility issues, and hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) said “The most common forms of [progesterone] supplementation during early pregnancy pose no significant risk to mother or fetus.” The ASRM also state they have “not” identified any “long-term adverse consequences” with progesterone treatment. They note that the “oral progesterone is well tolerated” with some side effects of “dizziness or sleepiness.”

Will My Baby Have a Birth Defect?

Studies on abortion pill reversal suggest there is “no increased risk of birth defects in babies born after mifepristone reversal” compared to the number of birth defects in general.

I Want to Reverse the Abortion Pill – What Do I Do Next?

Have you changed your mind?

If you’ve taken the first abortion pill and changed your mind, do not take the second pill. Contact an Abortion Pill Reversal resource immediately:

If you have an intrauterine device (IUD) in place for contraception – or if you are considering getting one – you might wonder what is the IUD risk for ectopic pregnancy.

If a pregnancy doesn’t happen, you obviously won’t have an ectopic pregnancy. However, if you do get pregnant while using an IUD, studies show that there is a significantly higher risk that the pregnancy will be ectopic. And an ectopic pregnancy is especially dangerous.

A recent large-scale study shows an increase in ectopic pregnancies in recent years. Use of IUDs has also been increasing. It’s important to know the essential facts about your risks and what you can do for your health and safety.

Let’s look at the IUD risk for ectopic pregnancy.

What is an ectopic pregnancy?

An ectopic pregnancy is when the fertilized egg implants somewhere outside the inner lining of the uterus. Most cases occur in the fallopian tubes and are sometimes called a tubal pregnancy. It is considered a life-threatening situation. Ectopic pregnancy occurs in about 2% of pregnancies which is 1 in 50.

Women with suspected ectopic pregnancies are advised to seek immediate medical attention. Des Moines University and Health Sciences warns that an untreated ectopic pregnancy can result in “rupture with severe, possibly fatal, hemorrhaging.”

Before you use any IUD, you should be sure to consult your doctor about any conditions you may have.

IUD Risk for Ectopic Pregnancy- Hormonal IUD

There are two main types of IUDs. A hormonal IUD is a T-shaped device inserted into the uterus where it remains for up to three years. Every day, the hormonal IUD releases a hormone that blocks eggs from releasing and thickens mucus to prevent sperm from reaching the ovaries.

About 50% of pregnancies that occur with a hormonal IUD in place are ectopic. That means a pregnancy with a hormonal IUD in place has a 25x greater chance to be ectopic than the average, which is 2%.

The FDA labels for all hormonal IUDs warn that about “half of pregnancies…are ectopic” if the IUD is in place.

It is also important to know that the International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies hormonal IUDs as either cancer-causing (Group 1) or possibly cancer-causing (Group 2B).

IUD Risk for Ectopic Pregnancy- Copper IUD

A copper IUD is also a T-shaped device, but contains copper and not hormones. Copper has been shown to block sperm movement and prevent pregnancy.

Studies have shown that if a pregnancy occurs when a copper IUD is in place, the pregnancy has a 15% chance of being ectopic. That is a 7.5x greater risk for an ectopic pregnancy than the general population.

The FDA labels for copper IUDs state that pregnancies that occur with a copper IUD in place are “more likely to be ectopic than a pregnancy in the general population.”

Risk of Ectopic Pregnancy and the Abortion Pill

If you were using an IUD and became pregnant and are considering taking the abortion pill, it’s essential to know the facts. The FDA specifically says the abortion pill “will not be effective to terminate an ectopic pregnancy.”

If you are considering taking the abortion pill, it is crucial to obtain an ultrasound first. An ultrasound can reveal the location of your pregnancy. When an ectopic pregnancy is suspected, you would be advised to seek immediate medical attention.

Next step – How can I tell if my pregnancy is ectopic?

If you are pregnant while using an IUD, it is crucial to obtain an ultrasound first. The ultrasound can reveal the location of your pregnancy. No matter what decision you are planning for your pregnancy, this information is for your health and safety.

At Waterleaf Women’s Center in Aurora, we can provide you with a free pregnancy test and ultrasound. No insurance is required. You deserve compassion and accurate medical information. Our medical professionals can also answer any questions you have about your pregnancy or IUD.

If you’re a young woman who might be pregnant, you may wonder how do home pregnancy tests work. What do you do if the test is positive? Can they fail?

Home pregnancy tests are a very common first step for many young women who suspect they might be expecting. Home pregnancy tests detect a hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) that increases in early pregnancy. It is often referred to as the “pregnancy hormone.” Let’s look at hCG, how pregnancy tests work, reasons a home pregnancy test might be inaccurate, and help you determine your next step.

What Is the Hormone hCG?

Around 7-10 days after fertilization, your body begins to develop tissue that will transport nutrients and oxygen for the pregnancy. During this development, your body will produce the hormone hCG.

HCG signals your body to perform various functions related to pregnancy such as stopping menstruation, thickening the uterine lining to support the pregnancy, and producing other hormones.

Your hCG levels rise very fast early in pregnancy and can be detected as early as 8 days after fertilization. The amount doubles about every three days.

How Do I Take a Home Pregnancy Test?

Home pregnancy tests can be obtained from medical suppliers such as a local pharmacy. With a urine test, you will collect urine on a strip of reactive paper attached to the indicator stick. If it detects hCG higher than a certain level, the device will show a positive pregnancy. This is usually shown within a few minutes on the stick by a plus sign, two lines, or even the word “yes.”

HCG levels can also be detected in blood tests, but these are primarily done in a clinic setting.

When Should I Take a Home Pregnancy Test?

A pregnancy test will be more reliable if you wait for a missed period. Since hCG levels take about a week or more to start rising, taking a pregnancy test too soon after sex may show an inaccurate result.

It can also help to take a pregnancy test first thing in the morning because there will be higher concentrations of hCG in your urine.

Can a Home Pregnancy Test be Wrong?

It is possible a home pregnancy test can be wrong. Most home pregnancy tests advertise that they are accurate at least 98% of the time. That means up to 1 in 50 tests will be inaccurate even when the test is used correctly. A Washington University study says up to 5% or 1 in 20 tests can be inaccurate. Several other factors can result in inaccuracy such as:

User Error: An inaccurate reading can result from not following instructions, such as testing too early, using diluted urine from drinking too much before taking the test, or misreading the lines.

Expired Tests: An outdated kit can lead to unreliable strips. Always check the expiration date before use.

Abortion, Miscarriage, or Birth: If you take the test too soon after a recent pregnancy—whether it resulted in abortion, miscarriage, or delivery—this can also produce a false result because your body may still have elevated levels of hCG from the prior pregnancy for 6 weeks or more.

Medications and Medical Conditions: Some fertility drugs “use hCG to help stimulate ovulation.” This could cause a false result on a home pregnancy test. It is also possible that HCG could be elevated for reasons unrelated to pregnancy, such as having a urinary tract infection.

Will a Home Pregnancy Test Show a Positive Result for an Ectopic Pregnancy?

Yes, even if your pregnancy is ectopic (implanted outside the uterus), a home pregnancy test should show a positive pregnancy because your hCG levels should still go up in early pregnancy.

The home pregnancy test you take will not reveal if the pregnancy is ectopic. This is why it is crucial to obtain an ultrasound to determine the location of your pregnancy. If your pregnancy is suspected to be ectopic, you would be advised to seek immediate medical attention.

What Should I Do If I Get a Positive Pregnancy Test Result?

A positive test is a big moment—take a breath and confirm your pregnancy from a medical professional. At Waterleaf Women’s Center, our licensed medical professionals can provide you with a pregnancy test and ultrasound at no cost and no insurance is required.

The ultrasound is very important because it reveals information about the age, location, and viability of your pregnancy. This information will equip you to make informed decisions about your next step.

Many women who have taken the abortion pill (or medication abortion) have changed their minds and wondered if it is possible to reverse the effects of the pill. If you regret taking the abortion pill, it may not be too late to continue your pregnancy. Contact an abortion pill reversal provider immediately.

Waterleaf: 630-360-2256. Call or text confidentially.
Or call the Abortion Pill Rescue hotline: 877-558-0333 for a medical provider in your area.

This article will explain how the abortion pill works, how abortion pill reversal can work to cancel the effects of the abortion pill, when reversal is most effective, and more.

How does the abortion pill work?

To understand how the abortion pill works, let’s first review a hormone that helps with pregnancy. A pregnancy is nourished and sustained by the hormone progesterone. In early pregnancy, progesterone will help a pregnancy in several ways, such as:

Signal your body to protect the embryo

Relaxes your uterus to maintain the pregnancy

Regulates your blood pressure

Supports development of the embryo

The abortion pill regimen is actually a series of two different drugs. The first is mifepristone (also known as Mifeprex®). The second pill, misoprostol, is typically taken 24-48 hours after mifepristone. The FDA approves the abortion pill for up to 10 weeks (or 70 days) of pregnancy.

The first abortion pill, mifepristone, works by blocking progesterone to terminate the pregnancy. It induces the lining of the uterus to break down and the placenta to detach. The FDA describes the abortion pill regimen as inducing “uterine bleeding and cramping to cause termination” of the pregnancy.

The second set of pills, misoprostol, is taken 24-48 hours after taking the first abortion pill. This induces contractions and “necessarily involves heavy bleeding and cramping as the pregnancy is expelled.”

How does abortion pill reversal work?

Abortion pill reversal (APR) is usually administered within 72 hours of a woman having taken the first abortion pill mifepristone and before the second pills, misoprostol, are taken.

The APR protocol works by “reversing” the progesterone-blocking effects of mifepristone. If taken soon enough, the pregnancy can continue. So it’s important to contact an APR specialist right away if you regret taking the abortion pill.

APR involves replenishing the progesterone that the drug mifepristone blocked. Progesterone has been used to support female fertility since the 1950s. In APR, progesterone is administered by injection or orally with pills.

Each woman’s protocol may vary depending on factors such as how far along she is in her pregnancy.

How effective is abortion pill reversal?

Case studies on APR have shown a success rate between 64-68%. The farther along the pregnancy, the higher rate of success. In one study, women starting the APR protocol at 9 weeks showed a 77% success rate.

The sooner you begin the APR protocol after having taken the first abortion pill, the better chance you will have to continue the pregnancy. Even if you regret taking the second pills, misoprostol, you should still contact an APR provider right away.

Does abortion pill reversal cause birth defects?

There is no increase in birth defect risk when the APR protocol is administered after the first abortion pill, mifepristone, is taken. One study stated: “the birth defect risk in women who have reversed mifepristone abortions is no higher than the risk in the general population.”

I regret taking the abortion pill – what is my next step?

If you regret taking the abortion pill, it is vital that you contact an abortion pill provider immediately:
