If you’re in high school and recently discovered that you’re pregnant, you may be filled with worry, anxiety, and fear. Thankfully, you’re not alone and there’s help available during this time.

Waterleaf Women’s Center is here to support and guide you through this process and provide you with important information about being pregnant in high school.

Here’s what you need to know:

You have rights as a pregnant student

High school can feel overwhelming as it is, and finding out you’re pregnant can bring about a whole new set of worries. Before you let those fears get the best of you, take some time to learn about your unique legal rights as a pregnant student.

Federal law requires that all public schools must provide special provisions for high school students who are pregnant or parenting. The law requires that students are provided with equal opportunities and support that will allow them to achieve their goals and graduate from high school, regardless of their pregnancy or parenting status.

You’ll also be protected from any form of discrimination related to your pregnancy, such as being unable to do extracurriculars or special programs. You’ll be provided with access to elevators, more frequent restroom breaks, accommodating desks and seating, and excused absences related to pregnancy or birth.

If you’re pregnant and concerned about being able to graduate high school or achieve your goals, there’s help available to you. We recommend setting up an appointment with your school counselor to create a plan that will lead to your graduation and to discover the resources your school can provide to help you achieve that plan.

There is a wealth of support available to you

In addition to the support available through your high school, you’ll also have access to other channels of help and resources.

While it may feel overwhelming to tell your friends and family members about your pregnancy, we recommend inviting them into this process. If you have yet to decide what you want to do regarding your pregnancy, seeking help and support from those closest to you can be a good first step in fully understanding the support and care available.

If you’re worried about telling those in your community or if you haven’t found the support you hoped for, your local pregnancy center is here for you. Waterleaf Women’s Center is here to provide free and confidential services to help you during this time.
