When Should I Take a Pregnancy Test?

When Should I Take a Pregnancy Test?

22 Mar 2022 | General

Pregnancy tests vary in how early they can detect pregnancy, but for the most accurate result, you should take a pregnancy test after you have missed your period.

How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?

Pregnancy tests work by detecting the presence of the pregnancy hormone, hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) in your urine or blood. Your body only begins producing this hormone after a fertilized egg implants and the placenta begins to grow.

The key to receiving an accurate pregnancy test is timing. While the developing placenta may begin to produce this hormone, it must rise to detectable levels before it will produce a positive pregnancy test. Taking a test too soon increases your chance of a false-negative test result.

How Soon Can I Take a Pregnancy Test?

As mentioned earlier, for the most accurate pregnancy test result you should wait until you have missed your period. This will allow your body’s levels of hCG to rise to detectable levels. It can be hard to wait if your birth control failed or if you are hoping to get pregnant, but you have to give your body a little time before you can know for sure.

Always read your specific pregnancy test’s instructions and follow them carefully.

What Do I Do After a Positive Test Result?

If you do receive a positive test result, verify it at Waterleaf Women’s Center at no cost. We will provide additional lab-quality pregnancy testing. If you test positive here, we will give you an ultrasound scan to tell you how far along you are, if your pregnancy is in the right location, and if there is a heartbeat.

These details will truly confirm you are pregnant by ruling out ectopic pregnancy and potential miscarriage. We will talk with you about your options and next steps following the details of your ultrasound scan.
