How to Tell Your Boyfriend and Family You are Pregnant?

An unplanned pregnancy can be daunting if you and your boyfriend are not planning on getting pregnant. After realizing you are pregnant, your next immediate concern may be how to tell your boyfriend or your partner and family.

It is essential to realize that you are not alone! The following can help you  devise a plan for the best way to inform your partner and your family.

How to tell your boyfriend – gather the facts

You are not obligated to tell anyone right away. You may feel shocked, numb, or anxious. It is okay if you need a few days to catch your breath and not share the news with anyone.

Once you have gotten your bearings, it helps to gather more information about your pregnancy. If you have not yet confirmed your pregnancy, you will want to take a reliable pregnancy test to eliminate any “what if” scenarios.

At Waterleaf Women’s Center, we offer no-cost pregnancy tests and ultrasounds. Suppose you have already taken a positive pregnancy test. In that case, we provide lab-quality pregnancy tests where you can confirm with a second test, or you can schedule a no-cost ultrasounds to give you information such as the age and viability of the pregnancy.

This information will be helpful when delivering the news since there will likely be follow-up questions.

Evaluate Possible Responses

Now that you have more information, consider relationship patterns and possible reactions from your partner or family. Are they compassionate and loving, or have they demonstrated a history of verbal or physical abuse?

Depending on their character, you should determine how or even if you share the news with them. If you have a positive relationship with them, they may be surprised or upset but ultimately give you much-needed support.

If you’re afraid they could react violently to the news, you will want to consider whether you should tell them or not and if you will tell them over the phone or in a public setting. If you experiences violence or threats of violence, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline by calling 1-800-799-SAFE for help.

Consider each of them separately and plan accordingly. Bringing a friend or third party with you can also add a layer of protection if you’re uncertain of the reaction your news will trigger.

It is understandable if they have questions, or are worried or upset, so be prepared for a reaction and a follow-up conversation after they have had time to process the news and think more rationally.

Make the Final Decision

Try communicating with your partner or family to understand each other better. This can help you if you need guidance. Or if you have a decision in mind, being able to explain it confidently can help them understand.

At Waterleaf Women’s Center, we offer no-cost options consultations where you can receive evidence-based education and learn about the different options in a confidential, compassionate environment. We are here to support you, so contact us today!
