Dealing with Feelings of Depression After an Abortion

Dealing with Feelings of Depression After an Abortion

27 Nov 2022 | Abortion General

Whether your abortion was a recent experience or years ago, it’s completely normal and natural if you are struggling with your emotions.

There are well-known physical and emotional side effects that can occur after an abortion. Equipping yourself with the facts can give you some working knowledge on how to heal from your experience.

One study of over 800,000 women found that post-abortive women are more likely to be at risk for mental health problems, including substance abuse, anxiety, depression, and suicidal behavior.

The good news is help is available! With the right tools and support, you can experience healing.

Acknowledge Your Emotions

Abortion causes a shock to your body because it artificially ends your pregnancy. A study found that 65% of US women sampled had negative psychiatric reactions to abortions and more than 10% of US women met all the criteria for PTSD as a result of their abortion.

Even if your abortion was not recent, you should still give yourself some grace. This was not an everyday experience, and you don’t have to feel like you have “to keep it all together.”

Many women experience difficult emotions after an abortion, and it’s important to understand that you are not alone.

These feelings can come and go like waves, so give yourself the freedom and space to deal with the emotions as they come, instead of trying to shove them down.

Some of the common emotions you may experience include:

  • Sadness or Sorrow
  • Feeling of Loss
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Isolation
  • Regret or Guilt
  • Emotional Pain
  • Nightmares
  • Anger or Rage
  • Suicidal Impulses
  • Self-destructive Behavior

Finding the Support You Need

A small support system can be very helpful as you walk on this journey.  Some women have found comfort from a trusted family member, friend, or support group at a local place of worship. While a trusted friend, family member, or worship group is a great starting point, you cannot replace a professional who is trained on how trauma can affect your body, mind, and spirit.
