How Do I Support My Friend Who Is Experiencing an Unexpected Pregnancy?

28 Feb 2023 | General

If you have a friend facing an unexpected pregnancy, she is likely experiencing a range of emotions. She may have shock, anxiety, frustration, or even fear as she processes the news.

It can be challenging to know how to support a friend in this situation. This article provides practical ideas for how you can be present and help walk your friend through her unique pregnancy experience.

Check-in on Your Friend

If your friend has shared the news of an unexpected pregnancy with you, ensure she has  a support system. Even if she says she  wants to be alone or needs time or space, don’t be afraid to text her that you are there for her.

Drop off a meal on the porch or app her a few dollars so she can treat herself. She may be feeling very fragile with her unplanned pregnancy, so it’s always a good idea to remind her that she is not alone and encourage her to take some time for self-care.

Offer Your Support

As you check in on your friend throughout an unexpected pregnancy, let her know she has your support. Let her know you are willing to spend time with her, listen to her,  bring her meals, and to go with her to any medical appointments.

Your friend may already know how she wants to handle the pregnancy, or she may be overwhelmed by her available options. Listen to her without judgment.

Encourage her to make an informed decision out of confidence rather than fear. If she feels pressured to get an abortion or make an adoption plan, let her know that only she can make the best decision for herself.

Help Her UNEXPECTED PREGNANCY with the Next Steps

If your friend is still trying to decide the next steps after discovering an unexpected pregnancy, you can recommend that she come to Waterleaf Women’s Center for no-cost pregnancy services. She can verify her pregnancy results with a no-cost, medical-grade pregnancy test and a no-cost ultrasound.

Encourage her about the importance of obtaining an ultrasound. No matter what decision she is considering, the ultrasound will show:

  • The location of her pregnancy. If her pregnancy has implanted anywhere outside the uterus she could have an ectopic pregnancy. In this instance, she would be advised to seek immediate medical attention.
  • The gestational age. This is determined by measuring the dimensions of the pregnancy. Gestational age is an important factor in her decision-making process.
  • The viability of her pregnancy. If a heartbeat cannot be detected, it is possible she may naturally miscarry. In this case, she would be advised to follow up with her physician.

Waterleaf also provides no-cost options consultations where your friend can discuss her options, speak to a licensed medical professional, and ask questions in a safe, compassionate environment.

Every woman should be empowered to make an informed pregnancy decision with confidence. Call/text Waterleaf confidentially at 630-360-2256 today or contact us securely online. We can help you best support your friend!
