I have already had an abortion and do not want another one. What are my options?

19 Dec 2023 | Abortion

If you have already had an abortion in the past and are unexpectedly pregnant again, other alternatives include parenting and adoption.

The following information can help you understand all your options so you can confidently make your pregnancy decision.

Adoption

If you want to carry a pregnancy to term but do not feel able to parent, adoption is a possible option. Whatever your unique circumstances, you have the autonomy and flexibility to create the best adoption plan for you.

Here are some of the available adoption options :

  • Open Adoption –  This allows for an ongoing relationship where you build and maintain contact with the child and their adoptive family that you help select.
  • Closed Adoption – The court seals all identifying information. There is no contact or sharing of information between you, the child, or the adoptive family after the adoption.
  • Semi-Open Adoption – Although contact details remain confidential, a semi-open adoption allows communication between you and the adoptive parents/child through the adoption agency.

There is no cost to create an adoption plan in Illinois. Support may also cover your living and medical costs during the pregnancy. The goal is to find a solution that respects the goals of all involved, especially the birth parent.

Parenting

Many women have found parenting to be a surprisingly rewarding experience. Here are some questions to ask yourself as you evaluate this option:

  • What kind of support system would I have among friends or family?
  • Can I co-parent as a single mother with a partner or by myself?
  • What resources are available to help me, such as public or non-profit?
  • Do I have a stable home where I could protect and provide for a child?
  • How can raising a child enrich my life and the child’s life?

While this is not an exhaustive list, this is a good starting point for considering how a child might fit into your life and what realistic accommodations you can make.
