What is an STD?
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) or sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are typically acquired through sexual contact or bodily fluids. They can also be passed from a mother to child during pregnancy or childbirth. Some STDs exhibit noticeable symptoms, while others are asymptomatic, meaning symptoms are not obvious. This means that you could have acquired an STD without your knowledge.
Common symptoms of STDs include:
- Painful or burning urination
- Pain during sexual intercourse
- Discharge from the penis or vagina
- Lower abdominal pain
- Fever
- Sore, swollen lymph nodes
Anyone who is sexually active can develop an STD. The likelihood of getting an STD increases if you engage in sexual activity with many partners or have a history of STD.
Why Get Tested?
There are over 65,000 cases of chlamydia in Illinois every year. There are over 17,000 estimated cases of gonorrhea every year. You may have an STD without showing symptoms. Frequent testing helps with prevention, education, and fast treatment. You could develop serious health complications without treatment, including the following:
- Infertility
- Heart disease
- Certain cancers
- Pelvic pain
- Eye inflammation
- Pregnancy complications
- Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

Engaging in certain practices, such as only having one sexual partner at a time and getting vaccinated, can reduce your risk of developing an STD.
